New England Geophysical
Reconstructing the Past
Archaeology Scans, Ground Penetrating Radar

Colonial cemetery Scan
Archaeological permits are
becoming difficult to obtain and excavations
can be costly.
By utilizing non-invasive
geophysical methods, such as GPR, we are able
to acquire valuable
subsurface information. Careful evaluation
of this collected data can
maximize your grant or budget, and excavation efforts.
Geophysical surveys with
GPR have been successful in locating
shallow graves, mapping
historic-period fortifications, defining the
outline of subsurface
features, and providing an immediate picture
of the site stratigraphy.
GPR, the propagation and
reflectance of pulsed high frequency
electromagnetic energy, can detail the
location, extent, and character
of subsurface terrain and artifacts by
providing near surface, high
resolution, and continuous profiles of the
site being investigated.
Some examples of our work
are presented here.

Fort Charles

The Parade Ground, its history buried for over three hundred years.
The Parade Ground of Fort
William Henry as it is today.
Ground Penetrating Radar measurements are
helping
to reconstruct the pre-Colonial and Colonial history of this
important site.

Scanning the Parade Ground
Depth-to-bedrock scans, using a modified GSSI 200Mhz antenna,
were
conducted to better understand the subsurface geology of the
Parade Ground. Next, a 400Mhz high resolution survey was done to
reveal
foundation structures and artifacts.
The findings
of this survey
will be published by Dr. Neil Depaoli, Archaeologist of
